Create Targeted Mailing Lists (Text Tutorial)
With Segments you can create targeted lists using any data that has been uploaded to, or collected in your account. This is very useful for sending targeted emails out to specific groups of people based on simple demographic data or on their previous actions / interests. Any data you’ve uploaded to your account, or that you’ve collected in your sent email reporting, can be used when segmenting.

How to Segment Using List Data
- Go to Lists > Segments > New Segment
- Give your Segment a name and click Choose Segment Type
- Select Segment List Members Only and click Save & Build Segment
- Choose one or more Lists you’d like to use to create the Segmen. Then click Done
- Set up your search filters. You can choose any field(s) from your list and have the field(s) be equal to, contain, not be equal to, not contain, start with or end with whatever you enter as the search parameter for each field. Example: “City” “Equals” “San Francisco” | Example: "Email Address" "Contains" "Gmail.com"
- There are no limits to the number of filters you can create, and you can connect your individual search filters using an AND or an OR. If you choose OR, then the system will find everyone who matches any of your search filters. If you choose AND, then the system will find only those people who match all your search filters. Go here to learn about the differences between AND / OR searches
- When you're done creating your seach parameters, click Save & Get Results. This will open the preview page
- The preview page displays up to 200 sample results from your search. If the preview looks good, continue on to Save Results
- From the Save Results page, you can use this segment data to create a Single List or to split it up into Multiple Lists. The Multiple Lists option can be used to run Split Tests. Take a look at this help document (needs link) to learn more about Split Testing. When you're done with the Save Results page, click Create Lists
- Your segmented list (or lists) will now be created and are ready to use in an email. You can access these lists from the main Mailing Lists area of the Lists section
How to Segment Using Reporting Data
- Go to Lists > Segments > New Segment
- Give your Segment a name and click Choose Segment Type
- Select to Segment Campaign Recipients Only and click Save & Build Segment
- Choose one or more previously sent emails you’d like to use to create the Segment. Then click Done
- Set up your search filters. You can search for recipients who opened one of the emails, clicked a link, converted, did not open one of the emails, did not click a link, or did not convert. These options allow you to set a date range for when the open / click / conversion took place and will let you enter specific links when searching based on click data.
- You can also choose any field(s) from your record data and have the field(s) be equal to, contain, not be equal to, not contain, start with or end with whatever you enter as the search parameter for each field. Example: “City” “Equals” “San Francisco” | Example: "Email Address" "Contains" "Gmail.com"

How to Segment Using Both List & Reporting Data
If you want to create a Segment using data from both your lists and sent email reports, then you'll need to do run an Advanced Segment that allows for multiple rules.
